We'll have the chance to welcome Wiebke Von Carolsfeld from Germany and based in Montreal, Joram Lursen from the Netherlands, Thomas Lilti from France and Panos Karkanevatos from Greece.
We will discuss the Identity of European Cinema with those European Filmmakers in a debate moderated by Christroph Straub from TIFF.
Christoph Straub
Christoph Straub is the Senior Manager of Adult Learning at TIFF. His portfolio of initiatives includes on-stage conversations with special guests from the film and entertainment industries as well as the hugely popular subscription series Books on Film, Food on Film and Reel Talk. In his previous role as Manager of Industry Programming at TIFF, he oversaw the planning and execution of small-scale workshops and talent development initiatives for filmmakers as well as large-scale conferences, featuring hundreds of guest speakers and attracting thousands of industry professionals every year. Christoph holds a Master's Degree from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.
Panos Karkanevatos
Writer, Director, Producer Panos Karkanevatos, is based in Athens. He studied cinema in Athens and Europe, and is an EAVE Graduate. His feature films and creative documentaries have participated in numerous international film festivals, and have been awarded. Karkanevatos founded the production company VERGI FILM PRODUCTIONS in 1993. Karkanevatos is a founding member of the Hellenic Film Academy.
Joram Lursen
Joram Lursen graduated in 1990 from the Netherlands Film Academy with his film De Finales which was praised both nationally and internationally and won many prizes like the Cannon Award and a Mention de Qualité of the prestigious film award the César. He directs the feature films Mijn Franse tante Gazeuse and the rewarded In Oranje, written by Frank Ketelaar and sold to different countries. His biggest breakthrough follows in 2007, with the blockbuster All is Love (1.3 million visitors). He was rewarded with a Golden Calf for best director and best film.
Wiebke Von Carolsfeld
German-born, Montreal-based Wiebke von Carolsfeld made her directorial debut with the award winning film Marion Bridge (starring Molly Parker and introducing Ellen Page), followed by STAY, a Canadian/Irish co- production, which she adapted from a book by Aisling Hunter. Her most recent film as a writer, director, and editor is The Saver. The film received nominations from the CSA, the WGC and the DGC and will be distributed later this year in the US.
Thomas Lilti
Thomas Lilti is a French director, who focuses on feature-length films, in which his style is very present. With a touch of visual comedy, his films are realistic and modern, always very true socially and emotionally. Irreplaceable is his 5th feature film after Les Yeux bandés (2007), Pirate TV (2011), Welcome to Argentina (2012) & Hippocrates (2014). Besides filmmaker, Thomas Lilti is also a general practitioner. He studied medicine and showed some of his personal experiences in his film Hippocrates.
